An enquiry about pruning.
Friday, September 18, 2009 at 11:33AM The Problem: A Brazilian friend has just completed a course in topiary and has expressed a desire to trim my box. Should I give him a free hand or consult Alan Titchmarsh?

Sam's Solution: I know all about this. Ideally, your box should be trimmed in early May, before the height of summer. Trimming in sunny weather can cause burning and a long time will be needed for recovery. If there is danger of sun damage, sprinkle the affected area with water. A second trim can be undertaken in early September, giving time for the bush to recover in time for winter. Electric trimmers will give the neatest results, but can cause damage, so it is a good idea to invest in a pair of special box scissors. Doing it by hand may take longer, but you will feel much more satisfied afterwards.
