Ask Sam: Talk to me. Tell me your problems and embarrassing little secrets and I'll try to give you an honest, if slightly tongue-in-cheek answer. just bear in mind, I'm not a doctor, nor a shrink, I'm just a girl! And us girl's have got to stick together.

An enquiry about pruning.

The Problem: A Brazilian friend has just completed a course in topiary and has expressed a desire to trim my box. Should I give him a free hand or consult Alan Titchmarsh?

MT, Norfolk

Sam's Solution: I know all about this. Ideally, your box should be trimmed in early May, before the height of summer. Trimming in sunny weather can cause burning and a long time will be needed for recovery. If there is danger of sun damage, sprinkle the affected area with water. A second trim can be undertaken in early September, giving time for the bush to recover in time for winter. Electric trimmers will give the neatest results, but can cause damage, so it is a good idea to invest in a pair of special box scissors. Doing it by hand may take longer, but you will feel much more satisfied afterwards.

Toe's company...

The Problem: My husband’s second toe protrudes significantly beyond the top of his big toe. Mine doesn’t. He says I’m a freak of nature. I think he is the peculiarity. Who is right?

CJT, West Midlands

Sam's Solution: Oh, dear. Has nobody ever told you about men with long second toes? Never mind, I’m sure your husband must have found other ways of keeping you happy, otherwise you would be writing to me about that as well.
